New lower “g” Google favicon… what were they thinking?

Google went right ahead and changed their favicon from the familiar, blue, upper case “G”, to a lower case, lighter blue “g” with a grey-transparent gradient background…
WHY!?

I recently discovered Nomao. A brilliant service, described by its makers as “The web 2.0 recommendation service of places and events”. A cool way of pointing out your favorite spots on the map, recommending places and events.
