Steve Irwin’s tragic and untimely death after being pierced through the heart by a stingray (short-tail) in the water of Batt Reef, Australia, has been reportedly captured on video.

Mr Irwin died while filming for his documentary called “The Ocean’s Deadliest” was postponed due to the weather conditions, and he seized the opportunity to swim with the stingrays for a segment on his 8 year old daughter’s television show.

Stingrays however ironic it may sound at this point, are not considered among the deadliest creatures in the ocean. In the past decade there have been 17 fatalities recorded worldwide, caused by a stingray - as “swimming with the stingrays” catches on and proper precautions are not always taken.

The Wikipedia article on Stingrays, says they: “generally do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up.”

According to Ben Cropp, a marine documentary filmmaker who reviewed the footage of Mr Irwin’s death, the stingray felt threated by the proximity of Mr Irwin and his cameraman. Quoting Mr Cropp, the stingray “felt threatened because Steve was alongside and there was the cameraman ahead.” … “It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest. It’s a defensive thing. It’s like being stabbed with a dirty dagger.”

This is believed to be the only human fatality caused by a stingray to have ever been captured on film, now in the hands of the Queensland Police.
