According to this report by BBC News, a strong earthquake has hit the southern coast of the island of Java in Indonesia. The earthquake, reportedly measuring a 6.2 on the Richter scale claimed the lives of several people, leaving many more wounded. Also, the area it affected is of great cultural heritage importance, as it is near Yogyakarta – Indonesia’s ancient royal capital city.
As this is a breaking news story there is no way to tell the exact damage the island and the people there have suffered yet. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will not be as grave as the 2004 Tsunami disaster.
