I finally managed to go watch the new King Kong, by LOTR director Peter Jackson. I went with some friends who had never watched the original 1933 movie, but were quite clued in as to what to expect. Truth of the matter, expectations were running high with pretty much everyone in the crowd. And that was a big audience in a theater packed with anticipation.
After the ten or more minutes of commercials and previews, the film started. And although it is indeed a long movie, I didn’t see anyone leave their seats before the end titles. A long watch yes, well worth it though. Special effects were amazing, the story was captivating even for someone who watched the previous versions of the story, and performances were better than what I’d expect for a monster movie. And this is by no means your typical monster movie. And the King although might fit the description would hardly ever be typecasted as a monster in the B movie sense.
Naomi Watts lives up to the damsel in distress, scream queen role perfectly, while she enhances her character with a different dynamic.
After a big fight sequence, which really kept the audience’s eyes locked on the screen, I felt like applauding, part because it was a good fight scene, part because I wanted to see if anyone would follow my example. And it worked. The whole theater was apparently that happy with what they just watched they just needed someone to prompt them to applaud.
Last time I heard applause in a movie theater was at the end of Cronenberg’s “A History Of Violence”, because everyone was relieved it was finally over.
King Kong contains some of the most beautiful, disgusting, frightful, impressive and emotionally tense scenes I’ve watched this year, all packed in one film. Much worth the price of the admission ticket.
